What is Organic?
Essentially, 'organic' refers to products that are 'uncontaminated' and 'natural'. The strictness of these standards varies depending on the organic label. However, organic labels such as Knospe, Naturaplan (Coop), and Migros Bio all adhere to the clear criteria set by Bio Suisse:
No chemical-synthetic pesticides and no artificial fertilizers
No genetic engineering
Fair trade relations
Energy efficiency of greenhouses
Promotion of biodiversity
Significantly less antibiotic use
Social requirements such as ensuring employee health and safety on the farm, compensation for overtime, etc.
Sustainable water usage
No clearing of primeval forests
Restrictions on imports (e.g., no import of fresh products from overseas)
NO air freight for imports
Prohibition of additives for coloring and flavoring
Animal welfare: Regular outdoor access, species-appropriate animal husbandry in spacious stalls, natural breeding methods, and organic feed strengthen the immune system and make organic animals less susceptible to diseases.
Why Buy Organic?
Essentially, there are three reasons: your own health, the environment, and fair working conditions. Below, we explain what each of these means.
1/ For Health Reasons
From a personal perspective, health considerations are a strong argument for consuming organic products. The 'avoidance of pesticide residues' has also become the most important reason why Swiss people buy organic (more on this in the graphic below).
Organic products generally contain fewer pesticides and are more natural. Various tests unfortunately show that some conventional products contain excessive amounts of plant toxins and antibiotics:
New Test: Pesticides in Fruit Pulp
“Beyond their peels, the inside of conventional fruits is often heavily contaminated with chemicals.”
“...it contained residues of seven different pesticides, totaling almost 10 milligrams per kilo.
The good news: Coop's organic lemons contained no pesticides. The peel of the organic lemon from Migros contained only trace amounts of a pesticide.”
It was even worse for oranges: Migros' M-Budget fruits contained over 40 milligrams of pesticides per kilo.
However, the laboratory found no traces of pesticides in either Migros' organic blood oranges or Coop's organic blond oranges.
Pesticides in Fruit Pulp: Oranges
Saldo has once again tested potatoes. The results confirm that only Demeter and organic products are free from pesticide contamination. The most expensive potatoes in the test even contained Fluxapyroxad, a harmful antifungal agent that, according to the European Chemicals Agency, can be transferred to children through breast milk and is damaging to aquatic life.
Asian fresh products such as Thai eggplant, watercress, and okra were examined by the Cantonal Laboratory Zurich: out of 20 samples, only eight were deemed «safe to eat without concern».
Self-experiment: How many pesticides do we ingest when eating? Four "Kassensturz" employees followed a conventional diet for one week, then switched to only organic products. The laboratory found alarmingly high levels of pesticides in their urine samples.
In the banana test, concerning pesticides like Azoxystrobine were detected.
The multidrug-resistant germs found on imported vegetables are considered “alarming”, as they are too frequently contaminated with antibiotic-resistant germs.
Pesticides in Swiss Strawberries: A test by Greenpeace Switzerland reveals the widespread use of pesticides on Swiss strawberry fields. The laboratory found residues of ten different pesticides in one sample and noted, «Children are more sensitive to pesticides; for them, the measured values of two samples are toxicologically concerning». The organic products were pesticide-free.
Pistachios: Snack Kernels with Pesticides and Mycotoxins.
Insecticides with undesirable side effects: “For instance, the insecticide Chlorpyrifos, a phosphoric acid ester, can lead to brain disorders and may contribute to the development of ADHD syndrome.”
2/ Ecological Reasons
From a long-term perspective, organic farming can also be more sustainable, especially concerning water, as sprayed substances eventually enter our water supply:
Too many pesticides in Swiss drinking water. Swiss tap water is at risk. According to water suppliers, as early as 2017, every fifth drinking water source showed excessively high concentrations.
Persistently High Pesticide Contamination in Small Swiss Streams
Concerning pesticide levels in Swiss waters. Experts consider pesticides to be one of the greatest current threats to our drinking water.
3/ Fairer Trade Relations
Beyond personal health considerations, there are also altruistic aspects addressed by certain organic labels (as mentioned above) – for example, fair trade relationships and the prevention of deforestation. Furthermore, bee mortality is a significant issue linked to insecticide use.
4/ Enhanced Animal Welfare
Organic also means stricter rules for animal welfare. Animals can go outdoors more regularly, and their living spaces are more spacious and designed to meet their natural needs.
According to the "Biobarometer Switzerland 2022" study, "animal-friendly husbandry" is, incidentally, the second most important reason for Swiss consumers to buy organic products (after "avoiding pesticide residues").
