What is organic?
“Organic” generally refers to products that are “uncontaminated” and “natural.” The interpretation of this term varies in strictness depending on the organic label. Organic labels such as Knospe, Naturaplan (Coop), and Migros Bio all adhere to the clear criteria set by Bio Suisse:
-
No synthetic chemical pesticides and no artificial fertilizers
-
No Genetic Engineering
-
Fair Trade Relations
-
Energy Efficiency of Greenhouses
-
Promoting Biodiversity
-
Significantly Less Use of Antibiotics
-
Social requirements, such as ensuring the health and safety of employees at the workplace, compensation for overtime, etc.
-
Sustainable Water Use
-
No clearing of virgin forest
-
Import restrictions (e.g., no imports of fresh products from overseas)
-
NO air transport for imports
-
Prohibition of Additives Used for Coloring and Flavoring
-
Animal welfare: Regular access to the outdoors, species-appropriate housing in spacious barns, natural breeding methods, and organic feed strengthen the animals’ immune systems and make organic animals less susceptible to disease.
Why Buy Organic?
Essentially, there are three reasons: personal health, the environment, and fair working conditions. Below, we explain exactly what this means.
1/ For health reasons
From a self-interested perspective, health considerations argue in favor of consuming organic products. Meanwhile, “avoiding pesticide residues” is also the most important reason why Swiss people buy organic products (see the chart below for more details).
Organic products generally contain fewer pesticides and are more natural. Various tests show that, unfortunately, some conventional products contain too many pesticides and antibiotics:
-
New Test: Pesticides in Fruit Pulp
-
“In addition to the peels, the inside of conventional fruits is often heavily contaminated with chemicals as well.”
-
“…it contained residues of seven different pesticides in a total amount of just under 10 milligrams per kilogram.
-
“The good news: Coop’s organic lemons contained no pesticides at all. The peel of the organic lemon from Migros contained traces of a pesticide, but only in very small amounts.”
-
The situation was even worse with the oranges: Migros’ M-Budget oranges contained over 40 milligrams of pesticides per kilogram.
-
In contrast, the lab found no traces of pesticides in either the Migros organic blood oranges or the Coop organic Blond oranges.
-

Pesticides in the Fruit Pulp: Oranges
-
Saldo has once again tested potatoes. The results show, once again, that only Demeter and organic products are free of pesticide residues. The most expensive potatoes in the test even contained fluxapyroxad, a harmful fungicide that, according to the European Chemicals Agency, can be passed on to children through breast milk and is harmful to aquatic life.

No Pesticides in Demeter and Organic Potatoes
-
Asian fresh produce such as Thai eggplant, watercress, and okra were tested by the Zurich Cantonal Laboratory: of the 20 samples tested, only eight received the rating “safe to eat.”
-
A Personal Experiment: How Many Pesticides Do We Ingest When We Eat? Four “Kassensturz” staff members ate a conventional diet for a week and then ate only organic products. The lab found an alarming amount of pesticides in the urine samples.
-
The banana test detected pesticides of concern, such as azoxystrobin.
-
Multiresistant bacteria found on imported vegetables are classified as “alarming,” as these vegetables are too often contaminated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
-
Pesticides in Swiss Strawberries: A test conducted by Greenpeace Switzerland shows how widespread the use of pesticides is in Swiss strawberry fields. The lab found residues of ten different pesticides in a random sample and states, “Children are more sensitive to pesticides; for them, the levels measured in two samples are toxicologically concerning.” The organic products were pesticide-free.
-
Pistachios: Snack Nuts Contaminated with Pesticides and Mycotoxins.
-
Insecticides with undesirable side effects: “For example, the insecticide chlorpyrifos, a phosphoric acid ester, causes brain disorders and may contribute to the development of ADHD.”
2/ Environmental reasons
Organic farming can also be more sustainable in the long term —for example, when it comes to water —because whatever is sprayed eventually ends up in our water:
-
Too many pesticides in Swiss drinking water. The Swiss Hahnenburger is at risk. According to water suppliers, as early as 2017, one in five drinking water intakes already had concentrations that were too high.
-
Alarming pesticide levels in Swiss waterways. Experts consider pesticides to be one of the greatest current threats to our drinking water.
3/ Fairer Trade Relations
In addition to self-interested health considerations, there are also public-interest aspects that are taken into account by some organic labels (see above)—for example, fair trade practices and the prevention of rainforest deforestation. But bee decline is also a problem that can be attributed to insecticides.
4/ Better Animal Welfare
Organic also means stricter rules regarding animal welfare. The animals have more regular access to the outdoors, and their barns are more spacious and designed to meet their species-specific needs.
According to the study“Biobarometer Switzerland 2022,”“animal welfare”is, incidentally, the second most important reason for Swiss people to buy organic products (after “avoiding pesticide residues”).

Reasons for buying organic products, according to the 2022 Swiss Biobarometer study.
