Preparing for What's Next: A Look into the Crystal Ball

The digital landscape and artificial intelligence are changing rapidly. We’re making nine marketing predictions for 2023 that will have a significant impact on your company. These marketing predictions were compiled by the experts at onlineKarma.

1. Prediction: Artificial intelligence will compete with Google and create new opportunities and risks for companies.

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has become an increasingly important tool in the business world, and it is likely that AI will play an even more important role in the future.

From robots to machine learning algorithms, AI is used by companies of all sizes to improve efficiency and increase profitability. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular can benefit from AI, as it enables them to automate routine tasks, reduce costs, and improve customer service, among other things.

With products like ChatGPT, AI is increasingly becoming a competitor to Google, which has led to a “red alert” at Google. Access to these advanced technologies can be beneficial for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), but it also carries certain risks during implementation. If AI is not used properly, it can have a particularly negative impact on customer relationships or lead to data breaches.

At the same time, the use of AI offers enormous growth opportunities for SMEs. By leveraging powerful machine learning algorithms and robotic systems, businesses can gain a competitive edge through customized services or faster turnaround times at lower costs. In addition, automated decision-making based on data analysis can help accelerate processes such as onboarding new customers or detecting fraud without compromising data security.

Ultimately, the introduction of new technologies such as AI presents both opportunities and risks for SMEs. Companies that decide to invest should not underestimate the importance of strategic planning in order to reap long-term financial and competitive benefits from the implementation of AI tools.

Prediction 2: The new Swiss data protection law will bring about quite a few changes.

On September 1, 2023, the new Swiss Data Protection Act will take effect, bringing about some major changes in the handling of personal data.

The law is based on the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and requires companies to obtain the explicit consent of data subjects before collecting or processing their personal data.

In addition, appropriate security measures must be taken to protect the data, and users must be granted the right to access their own data.

Companies that collect and process personal data must be more transparent with consumers.

Violations of the new law are punishable by substantial fines of up to 250,000 Swiss francs.

Overall, these changes make it easier for consumers to understand what happens to their personal data. Against this backdrop, trust between businesses and consumers could be fostered, which would benefit both sides in the long run.

Prediction 3: Generation Z is becoming increasingly important and is demanding greater corporate social responsibility (CSR) from companies.

A young woman records a short video with her smartphone

Generation Z—that is, the generation born between 1995 and 2010—has grown up with technology. It’s no coincidence that they’re also referred to as “digital natives.” They have a stronger sense of social awareness and expect companies to be transparent and accountable for their actions. According to recent studies, Generation Z tends to thoroughly research a company’s social responsibility. In fact, 63% of Generation Z is willing to pay more for responsibly produced products or services from companies.

Companies are being influenced by the younger generation in new and, at the same time, positive ways. For advertisers, this means adapting their strategy so as not to fall behind.

The trend toward greater social responsibility has been accelerated by Generation Z’s close connection to social media platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok. This has not only provided direct access to information about companies’ activities but has also created a platform for sharing opinions about brands and holding them accountable for any missteps or unethical practices.

This public scrutiny has prompted many companies to make changes that align with the values of younger generations.

Generation Z wants more than just charitable donations from companies. They want meaningful change that has a positive impact on our society and the environment.

Many companies have committed to using sustainable materials, reducing waste, and increasing diversity at all management levels in order to reach and appeal to Gen Z consumers.

Prediction 4: Twitter will fade into obscurity in 2023, while Mastodon will take the lead as the first major decentralized social media platform.

After Twitter has been at the center of numerous scandals, it’s not just advertisers who are leaving the platform: Time and again in recent years, Twitter has been in the media spotlight due to numerous scandals and controversies.

From fake news and hate speech to conspiracy theories, many events have led advertisers to pull their ads from the platform in droves.

What was once the go-to social media platform for millions of people has now become a source of mistrust and suspicion. As a result, users are becoming increasingly disillusioned, leading more and more people to leave the platform.

Many users criticize Twitter’s guidelines for not being strict enough to effectively prevent these problems.

In light of these failures , Mastodon is emerging as a potential replacement for Twitter. Unlike its predecessor, Mastodon is a decentralized social network in which each instance is operated by its own administrator or team. Rules can be established to filter acceptable and trustworthy content within each instance.

Mastodon has the potential to become the leading decentralized social media platform in 2023. Thanks to its decentralized nature, Mastodon allows us to enjoy freedom of speech without fear of censorship or harassment—something that was previously thought impossible.

Prediction 5: Meta will become Amazon's new main competitor.

The recent decline in Meta’s (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and others) market value has been nothing short of drastic. In just one year, the company has lost more than 60% of its value and is now forced to focus its resources on a different area: shopping. This shift in focus represents a major strategic change for the company, as it now puts it in direct competition with Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer.

Animated scene on the theme of shopping

Although Meta is still relatively new to the shopping sector, it offers several advantages that could give it an edge over the giant Amazon.

First and foremost is its already established reputation as a reliable and innovative provider of virtual products and services. Second, integration with Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp gives the company access to millions of active users who could take advantage of its services. Beyond that, Meta can leverage its extensive experience in developing digital worlds to create unique shopping experiences that stand out from Amazon’s offerings.

It remains to be seen whether these advantages will be enough for Meta to compete with Amazon in this increasingly competitive market.

Only time will tell whether the company can turn its resources into a successful strategy that will enable it to become a major player in online retail.

However, if Meta succeeds in making progress in this area, the way people shop for virtual and physical goods could change significantly in the future.

Prediction 6: Companies will increasingly need to ensure that they can leverage automation to remain competitive.

Automation will play an increasingly important role in the coming years, including in marketing, as it allows processes to be streamlined and made more efficient.

It is versatile, so that everyday tasks—ranging from data entry to more complex processes—no longer have to be handled by employees, thereby saving time in many areas.

In addition, human error can be reduced, which leads to lower costs and greater accuracy in the long run.

An animated machine as a symbol of automation

For companies, this is an important tool for remaining competitive in the modern business world and keeping pace with rapidly changing market conditions.

Companies are turning to automation to streamline their operations, increase efficiency, and reduce costs. It enables them to improve processes, gain new insights, and reach customers faster than ever before.

In online marketing, automation can be used for customer segmentation and personalization so that, among other things, potential customers can be identified more easily and individualized campaigns with tailored offers can be created.

Prediction 7: Brevity is the soul of wit—and that goes for video content on social media platforms, too.

The Film Clapperboard as a Symbol for Short Videos in Marketing

The popularity of short videos reflects the trend toward consuming content quickly and efficiently. Attention spans are shrinking, and so is the amount of time we’re willing to spend watching long videos.

This has opened up new opportunities for companies, creatives, and influencers who want to make a name for themselves with short videos.

Short videos are becoming increasingly popular because they offer valuable information in an easy-to-digest format that can be consumed in just a few seconds.

Short videos are often used to market products, services, and ideas in a way that more effectively engages viewers. They often contain the same content as traditional advertisements but require much less time from viewers.

Therefore, it is easier for them to remember key points about the advertised product or service when they are presented in shorter sections.

Animated scene about Generation Z and short videos

Videos are an effective way for both businesses and individuals to reach a larger audience with interesting stories —and at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods such as television commercials or print ads.

In summary, it’s clear that short videos are undeniably on the rise. They provide quick information without compromising quality or engagement, and are a great option for companies looking for innovative ways to reach new customers.

Prediction 8: Goodbye, Universal Google Analytics; Hello, Google Analytics 4

With the release of Google Analytics 4 (GA4), the era of Universal Google Analytics is slowly coming to an end.

Google Analytics 4 offers a range of new features for tracking customers over time. Among the biggest benefits are: multi-channel attribution, user-level analytics, and reports. It also offers cross-device tracking features that aren’t available in Universal Google Analytics. This allows you to track user behavior across different devices and platforms to gain a complete picture of the customer journey.

In addition, GA4 offers a built-in machine learning feature that automates data analysis and enables users to quickly gain key insights.

This makes it easier than ever to identify key trends in customer behavior and optimize your marketing strategy based on those trends.

The switch to GA4 is fast approaching—as of July 1, 2023, Universal Google Analytics will no longer collect data. If you need help setting it up and implementing it, we’re here to help.
