More and more companies and individuals are turning to social media to share their messages and content with their followers and customers. That’s why it’s important to stay up to date on the latest trends and developments in social media.

Early last year, we predicted a number of social media trends, which allowed us to prepare our clients before the year had even really begun.

1. Authenticity

BeReal. Be real. That’s the motto of the app that held the No. 1 spot in every app store for months in 2022.

The idea is simple: Every day, users receive a notification and then have exactly two minutes to take a photo and share it with all their friends. As a result, these photos are genuine and authentic.

TikTok has already released a BeReal clone called TikTok Now, and Instagram is also working on one under the project name ” Candid Challenges.”

This trend will only intensify in 2023. Users want realistic content on other platforms as well.

2. Artificial Intelligence

Technical advancements will be discussed more frequently throughout 2023. More accounts like Rozy’s—a virtual influencer created by AI—will emerge and gain followers.

Anyone who spent time on social media in December 2022 has surely seen them: AI avatars and AI chats with ChatGPT.

The former refers to avatars, which are usually created using real images and then uploaded as a comparison in a short video. The latter is a chat with an artificial intelligence developed by the organization OpenAI.

3. Twitter and Elon Musk

Unpredictable, but exciting: Twitter. A lot has happened on Twitter since Elon Musk took it over. Following the mass layoffs, new features were rolled out and old accounts—such as Donald Trump ’s—were reinstated.

Advertisers aren’t the only ones leaving the platform after Twitter sparked a series of scandals. Twitter has frequently been in the media spotlight in recent years due to numerous scandals and controversies.

We can only speculate about exactly what will happen in 2023. According to Elon Musk, Twitter will evolve into a Western version of WeChat. WeChat is a Chinese app that can best be described as a combination of WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, and PayPal.

Accordingly, Twitter will need to offer many new features in 2023, which could lead to it gaining—or losing—users. The key here is to stay on top of things and not miss out on the latest developments in 2023.

4. Metaverse

In 2023, the metaverse will play an important role in current social media trends.

More and more companies will offer virtual experiences to promote their brand and entertain their customers. These experiences can range from simple 3D models to immersive virtual worlds that stimulate users’ senses.

The metaverse is a term coined by science fiction authors to describe a virtual reality that is as vivid and detailed as the real world.

Technology has advanced in recent times, and many people are spending more and more time in virtual worlds.

5. Short videos

In recent years, short videos have become one of the most popular formats on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

These platforms allow users to create and share short, entertaining videos featuring music, effects, and filters. These videos have become an important marketing tool for businesses and influencers, as they can generate a lot of attention on social media.

The popularity of short videos will continue into the future and remain a major trend in the social media landscape in 2023.

Social media platforms are important channels for information and communication, especially for Gen Z . According to The New York Times, the younger generation is increasingly using them as search engines.

For example, they might search Instagram for information about specific products or services, or use TikTok to find nearby restaurants or help with school assignments. Companies and brands that want to be successful in the future must tailor their presence on these platforms accordingly.

7. Social SEO

As a result of the previous social media trend for 2023, social SEO (search engine optimization) will become increasingly important for creators and businesses in 2023.

As social media algorithms continue to evolve, fewer hashtags and more SEO are needed to accurately describe content and increase engagement with posts. Over time, the use of relevant keywords will have a greater impact on content performance.
